England begin their Rugby League World Cup campaign with a tough encounter with Samoa.
Delayed by a year due to the pandemic, the tournament will be held in England across the next two months, with the men’s, women’s and wheelchair competitions running in parallel for the first time.
England face a hugely dangerous Samoa side when they begin their Rugby League World Cup campaign at St James' Park on Saturday.
Despite Samoa having only played once since 2019, changes to eligibility rules in recent years mean that several spectacular talents from the NRL have chosen to represent them rather than Australia or New Zealand.

THE PREDICTION
England and Samoa will get the Rugby League World Cup underway in what could be a blockbuster affair at Newcastle United’s St. James’ Park. Hosts England earned a big win over Fiji in their only warm-up game last week as they ran out 50-0 winners in what was an impressive showing but this will be a much tougher assignment against the dark horses of the tournament. Samoa have been boosted by the defection of a host of players, namely from Australia, whom have chosen to represent their country of heritage. The likes of Jarome Luai, Joseph Suaalii and Josh Papalii will pose a formidable threat for the English side that have been hit by plenty of injuries in the build-up to the competition but still boast plenty of talent. However, this could be a war of attrition to kick things off and in a game that could go either way, it could pay to side with a low-scoring encounter with under 42.5 points the pick.
